Reconnect to Your Roots is one of the major projects of the Girmitiya Foundation. During the 19th Century, more than 1.5 million Girmitiyas (Indian Indentured Laborers) were taken from India to Mauritius, Fiji, South Africa, Suriname, Trinidad and Tobago, Guyana, Jamaica, Seychelles, and Réunion. Most of them came from the states of Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and South India.
Today, the Girmitiya Foundation is working to connect the present generation of Girmitiya descendants back with India – their ancestral homeland. This journey is what we call Reconnect to Your Roots.
The Foundation helps Girmitiya families rediscover their ancestral villages and cultural heritage. By reconnecting with their roots, families can better understand their identity and legacy.
